For my exam question, I have decided to chose the surrealist theme, creating images of that nature. I have chosen this because I think the way in which images can be combined and manipulated is interesting and can portray a manner of themes and messages from the artist.
"Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for the visual artworks and writings of the group members.
Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur; however, many Surrealist artists and writers who regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost, with the works being an artifact. Leader André Breton was explicit in his assertion that Surrealism was above all a revolutionary movement.
Surrealism developed out of the Dada activities during World War I and the most important center of the movement was Paris. From the 1920s onward, the movement spread around the globe, eventually affecting the visual arts, literature, film, and music of many countries and languages, as well as political thought and practice, philosophy, and social theory."

To the right are some examples of surreal images to demonstrate the kind of thing I will be expected to create within this theme (best viewed in a new window). They show the vast variety of perculiar combinations of objects and people in order to create striking and breath taking images. I think they all portray particular messages and ideas of the artists that have created them, with great effect. My favourite of the below is the image top left of the man within the man's head. I think this is a message related to the idea of a conscience or maybe the idea that sometimes we don't control our own thoughts, or maybe what we say. Within my work I would like to create, or portray, a certain message that I would like the viewer to interpret.
I have decided that my focus within my surrealist photography will be to try out the idea of combinations. This will entail mixing photographs together, whether it be through the combination of people and objects, or people and animals etc. From research I have already started, I can tell that what tends to be powerful work is that of that portray a certain message or idea, maybe ironically or for a higher purpose. I will develop my ideas thoroughly, experimenting with various influences as I go along.
One idea (for example) that I want to try is combining animals and people, the idea of personifying the animals in human form, reflecting human emotion and activities. As well as this personifying objects and other things too, with this idea of personification being the key. I will now investigate further, and draw inspiration from various artists and photographers that have worked in and around this theme. My main effort within this will be that I will further my skills in Photo editing and PhotoShop software, as well as setting certain situations up for capture.
